Summer 2008 – Update

Hello everyone!

Hope your summer is going great and you are enjoying the warm weather!

I know it’s been awhile since you’ve heard from me about the advisory committee, so here’s a very brief update.

The Dragon Youth Project currently has no groups going on.  Reconnecting Youth at La Plata Youth Services is expected to start up again later on in the summer, and I am currently working on getting a summer Girls Circle group together.

If you know any girls, ages 12-16, who may be interested in participating in a Girls Circle this summer, please let me know!!

The Dragon Youth Project is also currently working on including more teen pregnancy prevention efforts into the program.  Details on this to come!

I would like to have an advisory meeting later this summer – late July or early August – so if there are any times or dates that would work best for you, or will not work for you, please let me know!

Thanks so much for being a part of the committee!

Help please!

I am having a very difficult time getting the Girls Circle at Durango High School going.  I have met with Sarah St. John, school counselor, and Esther Belin, Native American Culture & Support teacher, on several occasions to speak about this group.  I have also met with the group itself three times, with most of the group only showing up twice.  The girls have not been bringing back their permission slips, and since I do not see them every day, I can not remind them.

Do you have any suggestions about motivating the faculty involved, as well as the students to get past the permission slips/initial steps to get this thing going?

Do you have any other suggestions about programs within Durango High School that might be able to work with a Girls Circle instead?

Let me know, I need your input!

Thanks,

Kendra

I need your input!

Hello everyone!  I hope this finds you well and enjoying the warm weather!  I just got back from my honeymoon in the Caribbean, so this warm weather has helped me adjust a little bit better!  Since I’ve been back, I have a couple of big projects I want to work on that are approaching very quickly.

1.  I sent out an email about ideas for my Bayfield Girls Circle field trip.  Harlene (Dave) and Jenn sent me some great ideas…so thanks so much!  If anyone else has any ideas they would like to add, including a community service piece, let me know!

2.  I received an email from ADAD today telling me about National Alcohol Screening Day on April 5th.  I participated in this through Fort Lewis when I was a student there, and I think it is a wonderful idea!  While conducting online screenings is an option, I would like to hear your input on where a good location in our community would be (besides the college) to conduct this alcohol screening.  I would also need some volunteers to help with the screening.

The screening does not need to take place on April 5th, though since April is Alcohol Awareness Month I’d prefer to do it some time next month.

Check out http://www.mentalhealthscreening.org/events/nasd/index.aspx for more info.

What do you think?  Let me know!

 Thanks,

Kendra

UPDATES JAN 2007

Happy New Year everyone!  Hope this finds everyone well.  As for me, I’ve been keeping very busy with the DRAGON Youth Project!  I am now facilitating two Girls Circle groups, and have one in the works for Durango High School.  I continue to facilitate Reconnecting Youth with students in the Robert E. DeNier Youth Services Center where we have just finished up with my second group.  I’ve also been working hard with Marc Goldfarb and Whitney, an FLC art student, to get the second “Choose Your Shoes” poster designed and out.  It is amazing and so much better than the first one.  I will have to bring some drafts with me to our next meeting.

Other than that, I have been working on community education in a few different ways.  I continue to do the “test your drug knowledge” with the Growth Ed group at La Plata Youth Services, which is great.  I have also met and talked with a few families requesting information about marijuana for their children, which has been both challenging and rewarding.

I would love to hear what’s going on in your worlds!

update

Hello everyone!

How are you all enjoying this weather?  Not me!  Not at all, though I am looking forward to the snow, somewhat.

Anyway, I just wanted to give you all an update on what’s new with the DRAGON Youth Project since it’s been some time since we have last gotten together.

RECONNECTING YOUTH:   I am currently facilitating my second Reconnecting Youth group at the Robert E. DeNier Youth Services Center.  This time around I have a group of 11 adolescent boys which has shown to be much more of a challenge than my last group.  However, I have only met with the boys twice.  We are meeting on Tuesdays from 4-5pm and are currently on the subject of Self-Esteem.

FLC SOCIAL NORMS CAMPAIGN:  I am still working with the FLC Counseling Center and Leadership Center on the “Choose Your Shoes” poster campaign and am pleased to announce the launch of the first poster design this week!  So, if any of you are up at campus in the next few weeks/months, be sure to keep your eye out for them.  I will upload a copy of the file (if I can figure out how to)  on the website for your viewing pleasure, as well.  Now we are on to working on our second poster design…

GIRLS CIRCLE:  I can’t help it, but this is my favorite part of the DRAGON Youth program.  I just find such POWER in a group of women!  I have officially started a Girls Circle group at Bayfield High School!  YAY!  I started the group last Wednesday with simple introductions and icebreaker games and activities, and will be giving out the pre-tests and starting the curriculum this Wednesday.  I have a wonderful group of 8 girls who are all unique and anxious to be a part of the group.

As for my efforts in Durango, I will meet with Dennis Bissmeyer, the director of Durango 9R Student Services, for the second time tomorrow afternoon.  He is a total advocate for the DRAGON Youth Project and has expressed interest in both the Girls Circle and Reconnecting Youth programs.  Right now we have agreed to focus on the Girls Circle program, and he has asked me to prepare a PowerPoint presentation that I will present to principals, counselors and teachers in the Durango schools.  We are hoping to implement Girls Circles in Escalante and Miller middle schools.  Wish me luck!!!

I spoke with Beth Hossfeld, one of the creators of the Girls Circle program a couple of weeks ago.  She not only gave me a more in-depth overview of the program, but she was able to answer several of my questions and invited me to participate in national data collection/research for the Girls Circle Association.  More information on that as it becomes available…

A special thanks to Harlene & Jenn for helping me to pick out the curriculum, Expressing My Individuality, that the Durango schools will be utilizing if the program is approved to be implemented.  These two lovely ladies have also been very beneficial to the start of the Girls Circle program by providing me with countless local resources that I have turned to and turned to again throughout this process.  THANK YOU!!!

Ladies and gentlemen, the DRAGON Youth Project needs your help!

Come fall, we will be implementing our new Girls’ Circle curriculum.  I have received the facilitator manual and all of the materials necessary to run girls’ groups.  Now, I need your help.  I am hoping to set a date to get together with you all, including our newest committee members, Miss Jenn Doherty from the Women’s Resource Center, and Sheree Volrab, from San Juan Basin Health Tobacco Prevention, to discuss this exciting new program.  Your input will be essential in the creation of the Girls’ Circle.

I will be in Indiana next week doing my residency for my Masters degree, and then in Cripple Creek the following week for the Reconnecting Youth training.  If we could meet sometime during the last week of July, that would be wonderful.

Please reply to this post with your availability.

Thanks, ladies!

Voices of Strength Conference

Hello everyone!

I just returned from the Voices of Strength conference on positive youth development in Denver put on by Assets for Colorado Youth.  The theme was "Weaving Multiple Approaches to Help All Youth Thrive."  The conference was very beneficial!

I was able to hear some amazing keynote speakers including Maria Guajardo Lucero, the former (founding) executive director of Assets for Colorado Youth, Stan Perea, the author of the book "The New America: The America of the Moo-Shoo Burrito," and Beverly Watts Davis, the senior policy advisor for SAMHSA.  The main theme of each of these presentations, in regards to positive solutions for building youth friendly communities, seemed to be this…..LISTEN TO THE YOUTH THEMSELVES!!!

I attended all three days of the conference, beginning with the pre-conference session entitled "Intro to Positive Youth Development."  Please feel free to review the synopsis that I have provided for each session I attended that is included below:

Intro to Positive Development, Stephanie Hoy:

This session introduced us to the 40 developmental assets which are believed to be necessary in order to children to thrive.  Stephanie explained how research shows that the more assets a child has, the less negative behavior they will display later on.  The 40 developmental assets has created a common language for all of youth development.  The following are the key points I took away from this session:

  • All young people need assets. (No matter socioeconomic status, culture, etc)
  • Everyone can be an assets builder. (Even in the most subtle ways)
  • Relationships are key!  (Especially with neighbors, non parental adults)
  • Assets building is an ongoing process.
  • Consistency is key.
  • Intentional redundancy is important.

Nothing About Us, Without Us: Effectively Partnering with Youth, Anne Marie Braga:

This session was brought to us by the Adolescent Health division of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.  Anne Marie Braga is the director of Youth Partnership for Health, which is a group of young people who come together to assist in decision making for health and prevention programs that serve youth themselves.  These dynamic group of young people presented the basics of their group, and explained to us why it is important for adults to listen to youth.  The provided us with ideas for adults working with teens:

  • Be open and honest when talking to teens.
  • Don't try too hard to be a role model – you risk losing authenticity.
  • To create a diverse group, go to all areas of your community…not just one school or neighborhood that has a diverse population.
  • Attract young people to your meetings and programs by adding incentives and interesting activities.

Schools Build Assets: An Asset Program for Suspended/Expelled Youth, Kay McGinn and Carmen Patent:

This session focused on a program being used in Nebraska and federally funded to work with students who are suspended or expelled.  We were able to review the pilot project, and see what worked and what did not.  The basis of the project is community service learning, in which suspended and expelled youth complete community service during the suspension or expulsion while having the chance to reflect on what they learned from the service itself.

Who Was There For You?  Deborah Fisher:

Deborah Fisher works with the Search Institute, and also as a freelance writer.  Through this session, she encouraged us to create our own stories when working with youth in order to engage them and to help build healthy, positive relationships with them.  She shared several stories of inspirational adults who helped some of the nation's most amazing youth development workers grow up to be who they are today.

The Courage to Show Up, Shannon Beaulieu:

This was perhaps the most inspirational session for me, personally.  Shannon actually taught us Tai Chi in the morning before the conference, which was a wonderful and positive way to start the day.  Her session reminded us that we can not create a safe space for the youth that we work with unless we feel safe and confident ourselves.  Through meditative, experiential and group activities, we were able to work on creating a safe environment in which both we, and the youth we work with, feel encouraged to be present.

Remembering the "You" in the Equation, Michelle Von Fange:

This session was brought to us by OMNI Research and Training, Inc.  It's focus was to prevent the burnout and stress that often coincides with working in the non-profit world.  Michelle mentioned that the average time spent at a job in a not for profit organization is two and a half years.  We discussed ways to prevent burnout and stress coping strategies.  We all committed to putting aside 15 minutes of each day for ourselves and to utilize one of the stress busters that we discussed in the session.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have about this conference.  I picked up a lot of information and would be pleased to share it with any of you.

PS As a result of this conference, I am determined to add at least one youth community member to our advisory committee.  Please let me know if any of you have anyone in mind….
